Shannon Russell: [00:00:00] if you have ever felt out of alignment in your life, then this is the episode for you.
Shannon Russell: I am chatting with Dina Berrin.
Dina began her career in fitness, and then she moved into staffing, and now she is an intuitive life coach, helping others through tarot, intuition, numerology and charm readings.
Her mission is to help people reconnect with their authentic selves, dissolving any limiting beliefs and stepping into their [00:01:00] full potential.
Here it is my conversation with Dina Berrin.
Shannon Russell: Welcome to the podcast, Dina Berrin. I'm so happy to have you here on Second Act Success. Thank you for having me. I'm thrilled to be here. Let's get into it 'cause you have a very windy path as we were just discussing.
Yes. So let's talk about where your career began.
Dina Berrin: Well, what I'm gonna do is I'm just gonna give you a little prelude and then I will jump forward. First of all, from an early age, maybe around eight years old, I was introduced to astrology by my grandmother. Mm-hmm. She was devoted to the stars and she introduced me to the idea that life is full of signs and symbols and hidden meanings and that early spark.
Has really stayed with me, so put that in your back burner right now. Okay. So now I'm gonna fast for forward to my first job and I started in the fitness industry. I have a degree in exercise physiology I love fitness and I still love fitness even though I don't work in it anymore, but. When I first started working in New York City, in the fitness industry, I was [00:02:00] always on.
I was always busy. My schedule was relentless. Early morning, late nights. I mean, when do people go to the gym? They go before work. They go during their lunch. They go after work, and I started as a personal trainer. I worked in corporate for a while, then I left corporate and I went to a bigger gym. That crazy enough was in a hotel that was.
24 7. And when you work in a gym that's 24 7 and you're the manager, you tend to work long hours because it seemed like there was never a loss for things to do. even though I loved helping people, I began to think. There has to be more than this. I was working, you know, 70, 80 hours a week. They gave me one of those beepers and they would beat me at all hours asking crazy things.
You know, we need more towels. Call housekeeping. We need more water. Call the kitchen. Like, it's like, this is a hotel. Why are you calling me for these things? Um, and one thing that I did notice is that people that left at a decent time at work. [00:03:00] We're taking a class of some sort. The class was kind of like your free pass to leave a little bit early and I thought to myself, I have to get a class because if I don't get a class, I'm going to die here working these insanely crazy hours.
So leaving work. One night I saw a a flyer and that was for a tarot class for beginners, and I thought to myself. Why not? Mm-hmm. So what I did is I signed up and that class lit something up in me that was already planted years before by my grandmother.
I'm like, I need to get out of this. And I left that job and I went to work for a staffing company where I sold staffing services, and that job was more nine to five. But at that point, I had already been taking tarot classes and I was doing tarot on the side. So I was working by day placing people in medically, oriented [00:04:00] type jobs, medical assistants, nurses, things like that.
And on the side I was doing tarot and numerology, and at that point I had learned some palm reading and developing my charm system on the side. Even though, , I worked the full-time job, my boss did know that I did this quote unquote side gig. Mm-hmm. But he made it clear you keep that outta the office.
And it seemed like the more I needed to keep that out of the office, it felt like I was kept on hiding these essential parts of me. Being told, kind of like to play small. And as that kind of went on a little bit more, it really began to not sit right with me. And around 2018, I decided to get my certification as a professional cove coach. I went through the CTI program, which was phenomenal. I am an now A-C-P-T-C, and I went on and got my PCC through ICF. This. Coaching certification and this coaching journey that I began in 2018 [00:05:00] changed how I interacted with people and changed how I saw the world.
I realized that I could make my reading readings more interactive, I could make them more fun. I was really beginning to like hit my stride with that. It was a balancing act, you know, having a full-time job and then becoming, , a coach and doing the intuitive work. And then COVID hit. Mm. I had three kids on Zoom school at home, and I felt as though this sudden change just really pushed me to the limit. Like my home was becoming a little bit of chaos and I knew what my boss wanted me to do because I had been in the job for over 20 years. But I realized I just couldn't do it.
And. That's when I decided to take the leap and I left my day job. I said, yes, I'm available. I'm gonna literally hang out my shingle as an intuitive life coach, as a teacher, as a reader. I do parties, I do events, I do retreats, I [00:06:00] teach, I do all these different things. , I created my whole charm system and basically my next act was.
Unfolding from there, but I feel as though what really kind of pushed me was COVID forced my hand.
Shannon Russell: Yeah. Because you just, I mean, it was impossible for all of us to balance everything during that time and three kids in in school trying to handle your coaching and your nine to five. , It's just too much.
Right? It was just too much.
Dina Berrin: And
Shannon Russell: I realized
Dina Berrin: that I needed to ask myself. What am I passionate about? Like what do I want to do? Because there really was an option there. Yeah. And, and for a long time I felt as though I was contributing a lot financially to our household and I could not leave.
But COVID really flipped that on its head and it put me in a position where I'm like, you know what? I almost have to do this because. From my sanity, you know, they always say happy wife, happy life kind of thing. It's like if the [00:07:00] mom is, you know, losing her sanity, how is that supporting the home? Yeah. And it was really important to have a foundational sense of support in our home at this time because there was so much uncertainty in the world.
Shannon Russell: This is an incredible path because you were building your side hustle the entire time, ,
20 years of working in staffing, you were contributing to your family.
But you were learning on the side. And I think that's key because I tell my clients often is that you can have this goal of what you want to create. But by starting it while you're earning that paycheck, you just give yourself more control of the future.
Dina Berrin: Honestly, because the way that I was doing my readings. When I didn't have the coaching, element, that component really changed how I interact and how I talk to people. And it also, it allowed me to go so deep, like I can go so much deeper because the coaching taught me.
I'm like, oh, I, you know, I see you're getting [00:08:00] emotional here. I've obviously hit a topic. As a tarot reader, I'm like, oh, I don't wanna make you cry. But as a coach, I'm like, okay, there's something really valuable here. It's time for me to lean in and say like, what's coming up for you? What's happening right here for you right now?
Yeah. How can we maybe work through this together? And I can give you 'cause. I feel like also sometimes people don't know how to deal with their emotions or their old stories, and I'm like, okay, maybe it's time that we create a new story. Maybe it's time that we reframe this. Perceived failure in your life.
My perspective is you cannot fail. We either win or we learn. So anything where you have felt like, well, I, I, I didn't do the right thing, or, you know, I I I could have been better or like, whatever that story is that you're telling yourself. How can we learn from this?
And the next time you can be better, you will be better, and you'll be stronger. You'll be more confident, you'll be more courageous because you know that [00:09:00] even when things didn't work out exactly how you wanted, you picked yourself up, you dusted yourself off, and you figured it out like you're still walking around.
That was out of fail.
Shannon Russell: No, not at all. I love that perspective so much, and I agree with it wholly because it's all learning and it's going to be something that years from now, you're not going to regret trying. Mm-hmm. Right. You would've learned from it. And Dina, I'm sure you have as as I have had clients who have worked towards.
Their second act, their next phase of life and realize, oh, you know what? This isn't really for me. I'm gonna revert back and go to what I have done in the past. And I look at that as a celebration because you will never regret not trying. And now you can go on down your path knowing you tried something, you learn from it.
And really where you were was best either way is a win. A hundred percent. I agree with
Dina Berrin: that so much.
I have a client who. Was working in a consulting job. I mean, she felt like it was like the old [00:10:00] boys network. She was always on the outside.
They don't like me. She goes, they don't even know me. She goes, but they've already decided that, you know, I kind of, I stir the pot. I, you know, ruffle some feathers, but she's like, I'm just trying to do a good job. Mm-hmm. And ultimately, , this client of mine, she, she's with me in my year long program.
And what happened was., She was so unhappy in her job, and I said to her, why don't we look at what you can do that's different? And while we started to explore that her, the company that she was working for came to her and they said, your contract is going to end. And they gave her like two months. But first she was like desperate, like, oh my God, I can't believe, and I said. This is a gift. Mm-hmm. I said, not all gifts come with bright, shiny wrapping paper and a big red bow on it.
I said, but we will look back on this and say they did the work that maybe you were too afraid to do. I said, so now we're going to take this. We're going to take two months of pay that they are guaranteeing you. They're not just booting you out the door and we're going to [00:11:00] redirect you into the direction that you need, that you should be in.
She was scared, but she trusted me and within three months she was in a completely different job. And it was funny when she applied for this job that she was ultimately accepted. , She said, why would they hire me? She said, I'm not the right fit. I said. You are the right fit. And I gave her all these reasons.
I said, you never stop until you get the answer. I, she's like, well, my, my, my background is not this. And I said, it doesn't matter. I said, they need someone who is an out of the box thinker. You can train someone how to use a computer program. You can train someone on your, your modus operandi, like how you run your business, but you can't teach someone to be ambitious.
You can't teach someone to be an out of the box thinker, that is what you bring. I said, you are exactly what they need. She's like, okay, I'm gonna go in and do it. And then when she got the job, she called me. I saved the message. She said, working with you was the best decision I ever made. I would never have been [00:12:00] able to do any of the things that I've done in the past three to four months without you believing in me.
She says, you believed in me when I didn't believe in me. Yeah. I was like, oh, my work is validated in such a big way. You know, I feel like you have to believe in yourself. When I first started doing tarot, people were like, this is a little bit of a strange choice.
You know, kind of like, I, I have a degree. I, I, I worked in sales. I'm a great salesperson. I, I did very well, but at the same time, I said. It didn't light me up. You have to do work that lights you up.
Shannon Russell: , I'm nodding my head yes to everything because you're right, you can be really successful, but you, it can just not feel right in your body anymore.
And I always say if success looks good on paper but doesn't feel right in your body than it is time to explore what will fill you up, especially at this age in midlife. When you say, you know what? I checked the box, I've done it. What else is next? And for you, so wisely preparing and learning and taking [00:13:00] those classes, I'm sure you were working after work and on weekends to get your certifications and take these classes, but then when this moment when the universe said, Hey everyone, stop.
We cannot, literally cannot leave the house. You had this, I guess, come to Jesus where you're like, okay, yeah, this is it. All this work I was doing on the side is now going to be my full-time role.
and I wish that I could say that it was so strategically planned as you just mapped out. Honestly, I, I feel as though once I started taking tarot classes.
Dina Berrin: I found two teachers, , that I love so much, and they taught class every Monday night and come hell or high water, I was gonna be a class.
And I went every Monday night for eight years.
Shannon Russell: Wow.
Dina Berrin: If anybody asked me for plans on a Monday night, Nope, I'm never free on Monday night.
[00:14:00] We are given exactly what we need. Mm-hmm. To learn the lessons. We are here to learn to become the people we are meant to be.
And I feel as though the only choice that we have is. Will I be courageous enough to take this invitation and do something with it? I felt as though I felt so seen and so understood and so connected to the other students in the classroom, to my teachers, to the learning.
It was almost as if. If I stopped taking classes, it was like you were taking my oxygen away. And then I did that with coaching. I, I wanted to learn how to be a coach and I,
I did so much work, but it changed me and I feel as though I am here for that. I will show up, I will work. Tirelessly. Like I do not care how early I need to wake up. I don't care how late I need to be, you know, working away. If this work is valuable and meaningful to me, then it's worth it. And I feel as though clients that I work with, I want them to feel the same.
Like I can't [00:15:00] want it for you more than you want it for you. So like, if. Women are interested, like just to kind of get back to what your whole podcast and your whole message is about. Like if you want to make a change, you have to feel it in your bones. You have to want this more than anything. And you have to be willing to do the work.
No one is gonna do it for you. No one is gonna feel passionate about it. No one is going to show up in the way that you do. So think about that. Mm-hmm. And if it's a yes, like what I call a full body Yes. Then, then rock on with it.
Shannon Russell: Oh, so beautifully said. And so let's talk, let's dive into what it is that your business, that what you do now really entails, because listeners might be listening saying, oh, I've heard of tarot cards, I've heard of Palm reading.
But really at the heart of it, tell me about what you do when a client hires you.
Dina Berrin: So I have a couple of different ways that I work. I have something, , that I started offering just actually this past year in 2025. It's called My Alignment Experience.
I started [00:16:00] this because 2025 is a universal year nine. Mm-hmm. And. Numerology works in nine year cycles. The first year of the cycle is the one. The last year of the cycle is the nine, and in the nine year, it's all about wrapping things up. It's all about streamlining your life. It's all about getting rid of anything that doesn't work for you, this is your year to get rid of all the rocks, all the, you know, the stuff that you've been carrying around that isn't yours, that you're just weighing you down and sitting on your shoulders and making life harder for you.
Get rid of all of that because if you do not get rid of it in your nine year, you bring it with you. Into the one which is the next nine year cycle. My alignment experience kind of was born to the fact that I want to get people in alignment in their nine year so we can be free and lighter and just be able to accomplish what we want to in [00:17:00] the one year.
The Alignment Program is a year long journey designed to help you stop living out of the rhythm and start living in alignment with who you truly are.
And what is in this program is a unique mix of tarot, astrology, numerology, charm work, paired with coaching tools, and we get down to what matters. We talk about your values, we talk about your purpose, we talk about your inner compass, and by the end, you won't just feel aligned. You'll be aligned. Mm-hmm.
And you'll move into the next chapter with confidence, clarity, and courage. So I created the 20 25 1 through the lens of a nine year. I'm creating my 2026 program through the lens of a one year, so I only work with, , maybe five women in my alignment program because I give them so. Much. I pour everything I have in them. I give them little gifts. I record them, meditations, visualizations. I send them [00:18:00] workbooks um, I also have something called my Happiness Reset Program. Happiness Reset is a. 12 week program designed for ambitious women who are ready to feel lighter, live bigger, and love the life that they are building.
And this is also through a guided blend of coaching intuitive tools. Again, my tarot, numerology, and astrology and ritual practices, which are like my charms. You'll learn to break the always busy cycle and reconnect with what truly lights you up and start doing your life instead of just chasing it. It's time to make.
Your joy, your daily habit. That's my Happiness Reset program, and I have lots of space for women in that.
And then I have. Individual one oh ones like if you want a tarot reading, if you want a numerology reading, I have a reading that kind of mixes it up a little bit. , I created these charm kits.
Shannon Russell: I've heard of everything else, but what exactly are those?
Dina Berrin: Okay. Charms are magical and we're gonna do a little charm reading for you here right now.
I'm just gonna show you a, [00:19:00] a few of the charms. , This is a ladder.
Shannon Russell: Yeah.
Dina Berrin: This is a spoon. This is a compass. Ooh, my charms, my little charm dish here that are for sale on my site. I shake it up a little bit, I am looking away and I am digging in. I dug in my little charm dish and I found this charm. Do you see it? Ooh, yes. What is this?
Shannon Russell: A mustache.
Dina Berrin: We're gonna do a mustache reading for you. So my first question to you is, , what is a mustache? Imagine I come from another. Planet and on the planet I come from, nobody has mustaches. You've been chosen from all the people in the world to explain to me from your perspective, there is no wrong answer.
What is a mustache? And when I'm done talking to you, I will understand it.
Shannon Russell: A mustache is hair that grows on your face and covers a portion of your face and hides it. So it's [00:20:00] long hair like you'd have on your head, but it grows on your face.
Dina Berrin: Okay. Do you have like a mustache story or like, have you ever like seen a mustache or experienced a mustache?
Has it ever brought anything out in you? Like tell me about your personal experience. With a mustache.
Shannon Russell: Um, I've never liked my dad with a beard or my husband with a beard or facial hair, so, they don't have it, and I don't have any experience.
So what does facial hair mean to you? It means covering up what you were born with, your full expression. And so I've never liked it because I, I wanna see that full expression. I wanna see your smile and how you speak.
Dina Berrin: So now I'm gonna take this and I'm gonna use some of the symbolism and the messaging that you gave me. So we're no longer talking about a mustache. We're talking about how we hide. Mm. We're talking about how we cover things up, how we disguise ourselves. So let me ask you, how are you personally like a mustache?
Shannon Russell: Hmm. [00:21:00] would it be playing small? Maybe not portraying your full self to others the way you need to, , or the way I should.
Dina Berrin: Yeah. So if this mustache could speak, it came here today with the exclusive purpose of seeing you, of speaking to you and giving you a very important message.
And this message, it could fit on one of those little fortune cookie type messages. It doesn't have to be a big, long thing. What does the mustache want you to know?
Shannon Russell: To not hide who I am and not play small and go out there and show the world my true expression and my real self.
Dina Berrin: I love that.
I love that. So that's a charm reading. And what I do sometimes is then I kind of like add a little something, if there's anything else that comes to my mind. So I'm gonna just add this. In today's, world, it seems as though , people like young. The younger generation is growing mustaches and, and their mustaches are kind of like, they're very [00:22:00] groomed they give personality, like when people show up and they like, you know, they have a certain shape to their mustache , they would never come and have it look like disheveled.
And I feel as though show up as the best version of you and maybe, you know, you're not ready to like. Jump outta your shell and be like the biggest and the scariest and the most courageous version of you, but make sure that it's polished. Always have pride, you know, you know, we always say like, I don't know everything.
Well, you're not expected to know everything, but whatever. You know, don't hide it. Don't shrink. Don't make yourself small. Go big and, and, and groom that and put it out there and be proud of it. So I feel as though, um, I love that what you're saying. Don't play small, but if you are in a place where you're starting out, do not be afraid to be small.
Just be proud of where you are and work it. And work it.
Shannon Russell: Oh, that is very cool. I've never [00:23:00] had a charm reading. I think that's adorable and awesome. And so much symbolism and meaning in each little piece.
And people come up with, they, they tell personal stories,
Dina Berrin: And unpack that from there. So I've had so many interesting and unexpected conversations.
Like I've had people wander over while in the middle of a charm reading and people will be like, how did you get on this topic? I'm like, oh, the charm kind of took us there. And, and people bring up things from their childhood. They bring up things from their earlier lives, things that they had forgotten about, that they realize are part of their current thinking that maybe isn't serving them.
Shannon Russell: That is incredible. And I'm gonna link to everything in the show notes. So if listeners want to go purchase your charms or work with you in that aspect that they can, 'cause that's very, very cool.
Dina Berrin: Yeah. And I even created like, I've written a book called The Way Within, but I also created charm journals, I wrote my book because I felt as though there were so many people that did not know who they were in the world.
Yeah. [00:24:00] And I feel as though. Being able to, and, and you know, I'm not expecting you to go every Monday night for eight years to a tarot class, and I'm not expecting you to study numerology, so you know it, that's why you have me. And my book is a very gentle introduction to tarot, numerology, and charms. And, and then, so what I did is I was like, I don't think that people understand how to use the charms.
So what I did is I decided to create. A charm journal and instead of making it like this whole big year long thing, I started out with a summer journal. And um, I just created, The fall journal and basically what these journals are, are talking about how you can step into this season. It's a 14 week journal. Every week I pick one charm.
I talk about the symbolism, I give a description of it and then I ask four questions.
And then every week they get one charm to work with and it's symbolism explained and. They'll be able [00:25:00] to tell their story through it. And I give them guided prompts and a weekly mantra. I really try to give them a space, like this isn't a journal, it's a ritual.
And they don't necessarily need the charm kit to start because I'm giving them a picture of the charm. I'm giving them a description of the charm. But it's a way to meet yourself. Yeah, season by season with curiosity, with kindness, and with a little bit of sacred magic. Like I'm teaching you how to use my magic.
If people wanna read the book and just get an introduction to it and then they wanna kind of go a little further, the charm journals are an excellent way to do that. Once again, very low commitment. Everything is sold on Amazon and they can. They are invited to do the work and not just read about it.
Shannon Russell: What a way to kind of even wrap up 2025 and get excited knowing that you'll have more of these in 2026. Mm-hmm.
Dina Berrin: I feel as though every day big things are happening and we are moving into that reset. We are moving [00:26:00] into that fresh start and now that you know this. You can be aware of the energy and think about like, well, what's my role here? How can I show up? And, and, and thinking about as we move towards the end of 2025, what do you want to leave?
Mm. With this year, like, what can you drop? What, like, old heavy coat? Or, you know, as I mentioned, rocks in your suitcase. What can you unpack so you can move into 2026 lighter with more opportunity and just like with a clearer head? So you can accomplish so much more. Like you are starting a new cycle.
Shannon Russell: This is fantastic. I feel like we could talk about this all day. This is so exciting. Yes. I want to ask you advice. So if someone's listening, a lot of my listeners are thinking about leaving their job, starting a business, taking that next leap, what is your advice to them knowing that you've gone through it and you're in, I can tell just by the way you speak, you are in alignment and you are happy where you are.
So [00:27:00] what advice would you give to listeners who are kind of at that crossroads?
Dina Berrin: Well, first of all, I would say be bold. I would say live out loud. I've learned different things from each chapter, so to speak, of my life. Like in the corporate world, I learned that I could work hard, be good at what I did, but I also learned that being quiet or quote unquote staying safe comes at a cost.
When I started doing readings on the side, I discovered that part of me that others didn't see that part that I had to keep hidden at work was the part that mattered most. And when I shifted into the coaching and the intuitive work, I realized that I no longer had to like. Temper myself or fit myself into a mold I could bring my whole self, including the mystical, the quirky, the deeply intuitive the work that I love.
So what I want people to know is don't [00:28:00] shrink. Don't mute your spark because it doesn't look like the quote unquote norm, your unusual path, your inner knowing, your voice, that's your power. And let it be loud. Let it be seen, and let that lead you.
Shannon Russell: That is just so empowering and I hope that the listeners or viewers can feel that empowerment.
'cause I can feel it from you, Dina, and I'm, I'm truly so excited for you in this next act and what you've got just in the future and how many more lives you're going to impact because. Think about it, you can. You were impacting people in your staffing and recruiting and getting people into the roles that they want.
That was impactful and wonderful work. But you're doing it on more of a deeper level now. For individuals and your clients? Yes. Wouldn't you say?
Dina Berrin: Yeah. So much. And it's funny, I, I listened to one of your prior, , podcasts and you were mentioning how, , Marie Forlio, , was a big, impactful person in your [00:29:00] life.
And she has been somebody that has been very impactful to me as well. Mm-hmm. One of the things that she says a lot, which really spoke to me was start before you're ready. And use the tools that you already have. You already have intuition. You already have curiosity. You already have experience in some way.
Let your past be your platform, not your prison, and surround yourself with people who say yes you can. Instead of, maybe you should wait. This is your time. Like you don't need other people's permission. You just need your own.
